3 Simple Tips to Help You Be More Visible While Trick or Treating

Halloween is almost upon us! This time of the year calls for spooky treats and creative costumes. However, trick-or-treating can come with more than a few risks. While drivers are often more diligent on this one night of the year, it’s important to consider your or your children’s safety as well—as opposed to leaving it in someone else’s hands.

So, how can you and your family stay safe this Halloween? What can you do to be more visible while out enjoying the trick-or-treating fun? Let’s find out!

Tip #1: Wear Reflective Gear or Clothing

Halloween costumes aren’t always super bright or colorful. This means when the sun sets, it can be really difficult for drivers to spot people. However, you can always opt to add reflective gear to your costumes; here are a few ideas:

  • Tape reflective strips down the back, sides, and front of the costume.

  • Add glow sticks to the costume (Kids will likely love this one a little bit more!).

  • Have your group wear LED lights (These should be easy to find this time of year in costume stores, party stores, or even convenience stores).

When cars can see you, the risk is much lower! In turn, you and your kids can enjoy all the fun Halloween has to offer without being overly (but still diligent) concerned about safety.

Tip #2: Hold Flashlights or Lanterns

You don’t need to jeopardize the “spookiness” of Halloween. Instead, you can find items that are reflective and fit with your costume. For instance, lanterns provide a great option to be seen and also go in line with the whole theme of Halloween. Get creative and find what works for you and your family’s costumes. And remember, safety should always come first!

Tip #3: Stay in Well-Lit Areas

Many neighborhoods should be well-equipped for this. But just in case, keep these things in mind:

  • Stick to areas with street lamps.

  • Opt for well-lit areas with sidewalk lighting.

  • If the porch light isn’t on, don’t go up to the house. This can be useful when determining which streets to go up. If there aren’t many porch lights, don’t bother!

As previously mentioned, safety should always be the top priority during Halloween. Once you’ve covered your basics here, you and your family can enjoy all the spooky Halloween festivities and fun!
